£1.2m funding boost for council’s A469 repairs

Caerphilly Council’s plans to fix the A469 road in the Upper Rhymney Valley has been boosted by £1.2 million of Welsh Government funding.

The road, between Tirphil and Pontlottyn, has been plagued by landslip issues since 2014, and real-time monitoring shows the ground is still moving slightly following recent bad weather.

Fixing the road will cost the council £20 million.

Last month, the Welsh Government gave the council £554,000 towards the cost – but has now agreed to more than double this to £1.204m.

A469 repairs will benefit residents who feel ‘forgotten about’

The council is now seeking a contractor to carry out the work on the damaged road. 

The work will involve complex engineering to stabilise the surrounding hillside area and road. 

Council leader Jamie Pritchard made the A469 repairs his top priority when he became leader late last year, and said the council had “taken the bull by the horns” by not waiting for outside support.

Prior to receiving the Welsh Government support, he said: “The residents of the Upper Rhymney Valley have been waiting too long – we’ve admitted that.

“We need to sort this out, but clearly we would be assisted by any form of external funding from the Welsh Government or anyone.”
