‘Caring and inclusive’ comprehensive school praised by inspectors

Heolddu Comprehensive School has been described as a “caring and inclusive community” in a glowing inspection report by Estyn.

Inspectors praised the Bargoed school for its “strong culture of care”, positive pupil behaviour and support for additional learning needs.

Estyn inspectors visited the school in March, describing it as a place where “most pupils feel safe, valued and supported to succeed”.

The report, published this month, highlights strong relationships between staff and pupils and attendance levels that are higher than those seen in similar schools across Wales.

Inspectors said nearly all pupils treat each other and staff with respect, while many teachers plan lessons effectively and support pupils to develop confidence and independence in their learning.

The report also commended the school’s support for vulnerable learners and pupils with additional learning needs (ALN). Estyn gave particular praise to the school’s Learning Pathways Centre, which it said provides “high-quality support” and helps pupils improve their attendance, wellbeing, and engagement.

Leadership at the school was also highlighted as a strength, with inspectors praising the headteacher’s “clear and ambitious vision” and the shared ethos known as “The Heolddu Way”.

However, inspectors noted some inconsistency in teaching quality and in how pupils’ skills are developed across subjects and year groups.

Overall, Estyn judged the school positively and confirmed it would not require follow-up activity or additional monitoring.

Responding to the report, headteacher Nerys Davies said: “This report is the culmination of many years of hard work and commitment by staff, pupils, governors and the wider school community, whose shared dedication has helped create a supportive and ambitious environment where pupils can succeed.”

Caerphilly Council’s cabinet member for education, Cllr Carol Andrews, said: “This excellent Estyn report is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the entire Heolddu Comprehensive School community.

“Their commitment to providing pupils with a positive, nurturing environment is highly commendable.”
