The owners of a Newport-based bakery are hoping to open a new store in central Risca in the coming months.

Nos Da Bakery has submitted a bid for planning permission to convert a unit on the town’s Tredegar Street, which was previously a tanning salon.

Matt Ellis, who runs the bakery with his business partner Ant Cook, said the firm specialises in wholesale trade but “really couldn’t say no” to the “prominent” Risca site.

“Having lived in the Risca and Crosskeys area for several years, I’ve always felt the Risca high street would benefit from a really good bakery,” he said. “I just hope that we can live up to that billing.”

Mr Ellis said that if planning permission is granted, the new store will offer “fresh-made bread and cakes, vegan and gluten free options, takeaway sandwiches and coffees, and eventually an option to supply buffets for catering”.

He said the expected opening date is late June or early July, depending on the level of works required inside the property, which sits at the junction with Park Road.

“Having waited quite a while for the right opportunity, we really can’t wait,” he added.

The application is currently under consideration, and can be viewed on the Caerphilly County Borough Council website under reference 26/0271/COU.
