Pupils at Trinity Fields School have been left feeling inspired following a visit from a gold-medal winning para-athlete.

Will Bishop, a Team Wales wheelchair basketball player, visited the Ystrad Mynach school, which is for pupils with special educational needs, on Wednesday June 10.

In the event, organised by Sport Caerphilly, Bishop took part in a number of activities with pupils, including a Q&A session. He answered questions about disability sport, wheelchair basketball, and what it’s like to represent Wales and Great Britain.

The visit gave an insight into the challenges the north Walian has overcome, and the dedication required to compete at the highest level.

The visit comes after Bishop, recently retained his British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Outdoor Athletics Championship long jump title.

He has also been selected to represent Team Great Britain in 3×3 wheelchair basketball at this summer’s World University Games.

Councillor Chris Morgan, council cabinet member for leisure, described the visit as a “fantastic opportunity” for pupils.

He said: “It was also a powerful reminder that sport should be accessible to everyone. We hope hearing his story will inspire more young people to get involved in sport and physical activity and realise what they can achieve.”
