Work is now underway on a “state-of-the-art” upgrade at the Coleg Gwent campus in Crosskeys.

The redevelopment, which was approved by council planners last year, will be completed in multiple stages.

The first phase will include the creation of a new ‘energy centre’, business and IT learning spaces, and dedicated areas for exams, independent study, and staff use.

The second phase, which is set to begin next spring, will include new engineering and motor vehicle workshops, a modern gym, and more.

The full redevelopment of the site – which first opened in the 1960s as a training centre for the mining industry – is scheduled to be completed by autumn 2027.

Cardiff-based Willmott Dixon is working on the redevelopment.

Some of the older buildings on the campus have already been demolished to make way for the redevelopment.

“We are proud of the role that the Crosskeys campus has played over generations, and these new facilities will ensure it continues to inspire and support students for many years to come.”

She continued: “By investing in modern, sustainable spaces, we are helping learners to gain the skills, confidence and experiences they need to succeed in their future careers.”

Coleg Gwent also has campuses in Newport, Usk, Ebbw Vale, and Cwmbran.
