Caerphilly’s town centre post office will close on Saturday August 8, amid the impending closure of the TGJones store where it is currently based.
The branch was originally scheduled to close on July 18, but the date was extended by three weeks while efforts to secure a replacement continued.
Post Office management confirmed it is currently in negotiations with an applicant to open a replacement branch in the town centre.
A Post Office spokesperson said: “TGJones made the difficult decision to close its store where Caerphilly post office is located.
“We know how important a post office is to a community, especially a busy town centre branch. The vacancy has been advertised and we have received interest.
“We are progressing with an interested applicant. We hope to have more news to share soon. We are working hard to keep any period of closure to a minimum.”
Blaenau Gwent Caerffili Rhymni Senedd Member Lindsay Whittle welcomed the progress after raising the closure with Post Office representatives.
The Plaid Cymru MS said: “With the closure of the post office, many people who live around the town centre are having to make the journey to Castle View or Penyrheol, which is time-consuming. We need a town centre post office urgently.”
During any gap between the Cardiff Road closure and a new branch opening, the nearest alternative branches for residents are:
- Castle View Post Office: Inside Tesco, Castle View Shopping Centre, Nantgarw Road
- Penyrheol Post Office: 8-10 Troed Y Bryn
