Coleg Gwent students impress with hair and beauty designs

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 11:00, Friday June 17th, 2011.

Hair and beauty students from Coleg Gwent’s Crosskeys campus saw their creations come to life at their annual hair show recently.

Highlights of the show included models parading the catwalk as a ‘broken record’ and sporting grunge chic to the backdrop of music through the eras – from Mozart through to Lady GaGa.

Students had to style hair and create a full look in-line with their theme to include make-up and outfits.

There were two competitions. Level 3 hairdressers showcased looks inspired by Music through the Ages while theatrical make-up students had produce looks themed around ‘Earth and the World’, with a musical twist.

Eighteen-year-old Carly Phillips from Aberbeeg scooped first place in the Level 3 competition with her Burlesque-themed design. Pipped at the post was 24-year-old Leanne Redman from Talywain who took a very close second with her 1920s style look. And 1980s music-inspired Cameron Mohr, 20, from Newbridge, took third place with his colourful retro style.

Forty three-year-old Helen Basnett from Rogerstone’s creation took first place in the theatrical make-up competition. Seventeen-year-old Jorden Bowen from Caerphilly came second and was closely followed by 18-year-old Sinitta Weston, also from Caerphilly.

Lecturer Tammy Wheeler was thrilled with the work the students produced and said: “The standard of work on show was exceptional and the event itself was truly stunning. We were all knocked out by how well the students worked together to create a highly professional show.

“We’re all incredibly proud of the high standard of the show, as well as the commitment from the students and the support of the lecturers involved.

“I continue to be amazed by the high level of skills and creativity of our students. They have been incredibly successful in producing a fabulous event which showcases all they have been learning in college.”

Coleg Gwent will be holding its open days on all of its campuses on Wednesday June 29. For more information visit www.coleggwent.ac.uk
