Islwyn MP Chris Evans has urged residents to nominate local champions to become an Olympic Torchbearer.

The Olympic Flame will arrive in the UK in less than a year and Mr Evans is inviting people in Caerphilly County Borough to nominate inspirational figures to take part in an Olympic Torch Relay.

The torch will be carried across the UK by over 8,000 torch bearers and will pass through South Wales on Friday July 1 2012. Nominated torchbearers must be aged 12 or over and must have made a difference in their community.

Mr Evans said: “This search is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the best Islwyn has to offer.

“We all know local heroes who give their best for their community, often with little recognition. Now is our chance to nominate inspirational people from Islwyn to take part in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

“South Wales will play a unique part in the 2012 Olympics, with nearly 5,000 medals produced here. I hope that as many people as possible from Islwyn will play a part in the games next year and represent our area when the Olympic Torch passes through.’

Nominations can be made online at lloydstsb.com/carrytheflame. A selection panel made up of LloydsTsb bank representatives and independent adjudicators will review all the nominations and identify a final shortlist in each community.
