Glamorgan County Cricket star Robert Croft joined primary school children in Trethomas to help celebrate the game.

Pupils from Tyn Y Wern School took part in the ‘Brit Insurance National Cricket Day last week as part of a campaign to get more children playing the sport.

They were among thousands of pupils in schools across the country that enjoyed cricket-themed activities.

The day was part of the Chance to Shine campaign, run by the Cricket Foundation charity, that helps link cricket clubs to local state schools.

In Trethomas pupils took part in a cricket themed art lesson to design a bat sticker and a maths lesson on the coordinates of a cricket pitch.

Teacher and PE co-ordinator Sandie Keane said: “The children have really been bowled over by their day of cricket. It’s a great team sport that can be played by boys and girls and also by children with mixed sporting ability. We were pleased to support Chance to Shine’s festival of cricket in schools.”

Glamorgan star and former England spinner Robert Croft said: “The Chance to Shine programme is a brilliant initiative, making cricket so much more accessible to children from all walks of life.

“Cricket is the ultimate team game and can teach children respect, how to win, to lose and cope with setbacks. It is a really inclusive sport and crosses all cultures and backgrounds. It gives opportunities to boys and girls, as well as those with special needs. It’s a real honour to be involved.”
