Woods opened up as volunteers hit the trail

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 17:12, Thursday July 7th, 2011.

Volunteers have helped to open up a woodland trail for people by clearing a footpath that was becoming overgrown.

Forestry Commission Wales enlisted the support of 15 helpers from the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers who spent three days working on the blocked path running from Brynhill Farm by Lisvane, Cardiff, into Welsh Government-owned Coed Llwyn Celyn woodland, just north of Cardiff.

FC Wales community ranger Emma Louise Felkin said: “The path had become very overgrown and a number of trees had fallen over the path, blocking it and making it hard to walk along.

“We spent three days strimming, brushcutting and cutting the trees to clear the footpath so that it can be enjoyed by visitors once again.”

Once the path was cleared, FC Wales improved access further by removing a fence to allow people to continue walking into the adjacent Coed Coesau Whips woodland.

The work opened up a number of walks through a mix of broadleaf and conifers. FC Wales also recently resurfaced the car park at Llwyn Celyn.

The woodlands are home to the Ridgeway Rides, a selection of horse routes run by Safety and Facilities for Equestrians (SAFE), FC Wales and Caerphilly County Borough Council.
