Cycling’s Tour of Britain appeals for volunteers

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 08:10, Tuesday August 9th, 2011.

Volunteers are being sought for the Tour of Britain, which comes to Caerphilly next month.

Ninety-six professional cyclists will make the 182km ride from Welshpoool to the top of Caerphilly Mountain on September 14 as part of stage four of the national race.

Race organisers are in need of help though and are asking the public for their help.

Several hundred have already put their names forward to help out at stages across the UK.

Race Director Mick Bennett said: “We’d like to publicly thank those who have already volunteered to be a part of The Tour of Britain.

“Without volunteers events like The Tour of Britain and other cycle races in the UK simply couldn’t happen.

“Today we are officially launching the drive to recruit volunteers across the entire Tour of Britain, but in particular we are looking for around 500 volunteers for the TfL London Stage on Sunday September 18, which is due to be our biggest ever day of The Tour of Britain.”

Volunteers will be entered into a prize draw to win a VIP package at a stage of their choosing and will receive a goody bag on the day of their help.

The Tour of Britain begins in Scotland on Sunday September 11 and finishes in London on September 18.

The majority of volunteers are needed to act as Course Marshalls at strategic points providing vital support to The Tour of Britain’s own marshalling and security teams, while other roles include assisting in the running of team parking, spectator liaison and conducting spectator surveys.
