Caerphilly town has successfully retained its Fairtrade status.

A ‘Fairtrade Town’ is classed an area that has made a commitment to support Fairtrade and use products from the ethical goods range.

Businesses, community groups, schools and individuals have all contributed to making Caerphilly a Fairtrade Town by pledging to support Fairtrade and promote the scheme which promises a fair wage to producers in developing countries.

Cllr Ron Davies, Caerphilly County Borough Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, welcomed the announcement.

He said: “We are delighted that Caerphilly has once again received this important recognition which clearly shows that we are responding to today’s ethically aware consumers.

“The town’s commitment to support and promote Fairtrade products will help shoppers and visitors make a small contribution towards improving the lives of producers across the developing world.”

The Caerphilly Fairtrade Group, which is made up of retailers, shoppers and residents celebrated the news recently when council town centre development manager Andrew Highway presented them with the Fairtrade certificate.
