The Winding House in New Tredegar is calling on local people with objects, photographs and memories of the 1984/85 Miners’ Strike to get in touch.
The museum is currently developing a new learning programme for schools on this important period in our recent history, and is hoping local people will come forward with any memorabilia they have, which could be used in developing this project.
Dean Veall,lifelong learning officer at the Winding House, said: “The Winding House is working with the British Library on a project called ‘Campaign! Make an impact’. In this project, pupils will learn about the 1984/85 Miners’ Strike and the tactics used to campaign against the closure of the coal mines.
“We are appealing to local residents to loan or donate anything that relates to the Miners’ Strike such as newspapers, badges, posters, banners, leaflets, photographs etc. We are also looking got volunteers, who would be happy to share their memories, experiences and stories. All of these will be used to teach this significant aspect of recent history to young people and will help bring local history into the classroom.”

This sounds like an excellent project, I wish it every success. The strike was a defining moment of history, it was a veritable earthquake and we in South Wales still experience the aftershocks.
