Fascinating discoveries at Caerleon. Before the 2nd Augusta legion were brought in to pacify the troublesome Silure the main fort was on another part of the river. This fort was in the area of the town we now call Usk, and occupied by (if memory serves correctly) the 20th legion, who were later redeployed to Chester.

The 2nd Legion moved location to Caerleon, probably because there were flooding and silting problems at Usk, and their efforts resulted in the impressive remains that we can enjoy now.

What I would like to know, and perhaps readers can advise, are there any discovered remains of quays at Usk? The same logic applies, the Roman military would have used the river for movement of heavy supplies way before the fort at Caerleon was constructed.
