Caerphilly County Borough achieves a 2011 GCSE pass rate of 96.7%

GCSE students across Caerphilly County Borough have achieved a pass rate of 96.7% – down from the 2010 figure of 97.9%.

The percentage of pupils who achieved the five GCSE passes at A* to C, or vocational equivalent, has increased slightly to 61.3% up from 61.2% in 2010.

The percentage of grades awarded at A* to C is 58.6% – down from 61.1% last year.

Cllr Phil Bevan, cabinet member for education, leisure and lifelong learning, said: “Our young people and their teachers deserve to be congratulated on their achievements, commitment and tireless effort.”

Sandra Aspinall, the council’s director for education lifelong learning and leisure said: “Once again, our provisional results demonstrate the hard work undertaken by our young people and their teachers.”

There was no increase in the overall GCSE pass rate across Wales for 2011 compared to last year.

The pass rate remained at the 2010 level of 98.7%, although the proportion of those getting A* did increase slightly by 0.1% point to 66.5%.
