Hengoed teen praised for helping collapsed man in street

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 13:09, Thursday September 1st, 2011.

A Hengoed teenager has been praised for his quick thinking actions in helping a collapsed man in the street.

Jordan Franklin, 14, was walking home from Hengoed train station when he came across a man lying on the pavement, lapsing in and out of consciousness.

The teen realised the man had been drinking and checked him for any sharp objects. He called an ambulance and stayed with the man until paramedics were at the scene.

Jordan recently took part in the Phoenix Project after voluntary attending the Youth Inclusion Support Programme (YISP) at the local Youth Offending Service.

He said: “It was thanks to what I learned during my time at the Phoenix Project that gave me the basic first aid training and confidence to be able to support this gentleman.”

The youngster’s proud mother contacted a member of the YISP team to tell them about his actions.

Jordan has been working voluntarily on a YISP since May. Its purpose is an early intervention to prevent antisocial behaviour among eight to 15 year-olds.

Cllr Judith Pritchard, cabinet member for social services said: “I am full of praise for Jordan, whose quick thinking, calm actions without doubt helped ensure the gentleman got the medical help he needed.

“It is pleasing to see that through taking part in the Phoenix Project, this provided Jordan with the confidence to put his newly acquired knowledge into action, and be able to support the gentleman in the way he did”.

The Phoenix Project was set up with the help from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and works to improving confidence and communication skills.

Keen to build upon his newly acquired skills, Jordan will be joining the local Young Firefighters group with the New Year intake.

Well done Jordan. You have shown a remarkable sense of responsibility and your family, friends and us strangers are proud to have you in our midst. Congratulations.
