The new £300,000 Caerphilly Mountain Snackbar had its grand unveiling on the weekend.

On Saturday, guests packed out the popular location to discover what had changed.

Snack bar owner Gavin Jones, who originally bought the business aged 21 in 1992, said: “The launch has been great.

“It was touch and go because we were three weeks behind on the build but our builders managed to do two weeks’ of work in one week and squeezed everything in. “It has taken us five years to get here and I’m absolutely thrilled.”

The new building is seven times the size of the old snack bar and has been designed to be eco-friendly.

Solar panels feed into the under floor heating and hot water systems while rainwater will be collected and stored in a 6,000 gallon container to flush the toilets with.

Established in 1957, the Caerphilly Mountain Snack Bar is famous to all who make the trip over the mountain to Cardiff. It claims to be the oldest independent snack bar in the UK.

Worker Will Thomas said: “I’ve worked here for about a year. The new building is great – a bit different and a lot bigger than the old one.”

Visitors were treated to live music from a brass band Melingriffith and Caerphilly Male Voice Choir.
