New campaign in Caerphilly County Borough warns parents of internet dangers

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 15:00, Wednesday September 21st, 2011.

A guide to help parents make sure their children are safe online has been produced.

The leaflet, part of a campaign by the Caerphilly Safeguarding Children Board, aims to raise awareness of the dangers that technology can pose to youngsters. Barnardo’s Cymru, a member of the board, is supporting the campaign.

Albert Heaney, Caerphilly County Brough Council’s director of Social Services and chair of the Safeguarding Children Board said: “Children of all ages are using the web to play games, download music, help their homework and to keep connected with friends.

“The internet has many benefits; however there are also some risks that parents need to be aware of. Dangers such as cyber bullying, being exposed to indecent images or contact with inappropriate people are just some of the issues we need to protect children from.

“Children and young people are not always aware of the danger of sharing information about themselves with others for example. There are a few simple steps that can be taken to help minimise these risks while making sure your child still experiences the benefits of the internet.”

The leaflet about technology safety is available from council offices, libraries and GP surgeries across the county borough.

The Caerphilly Safeguarding Children Board replaced the former Area Child Protection Committee after a change in the law in 2004.

The board has the lead role in ensuring children and young people in Caerphilly County Borough are protected from abuse, neglect, exploitation and live in an environment that promotes their well-being and life chances.
