Islwyn MP Chris Evans made sure he didn’t miss the boat when he official opened the Community Waterways Festival in Risca this week.

At a fun day which saw a host of family activities, including face painting and a bucking bronco, Mr Evans joined canal enthusiasts and local residents for a trip on the canals around Risca.

The day was organised by the Monmouthshire, Brecon and Abergavenny Canals Trust and the Islwyn Canal Association who promote the preservation and restoration of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal.

Mr Evans said: “I was delighted to open the Community Waterways Festival. Travelling by boat was certainly a unique way to see Risca and it is fantastic that we have these waterways on our doorsteps.

“Monmouthshire, Brecon and Abergavennny Canals Trust and the Islwyn Canal Association do a great job at raising awareness of our unique canals.

“My message to people in Islwyn is do not miss the boat, go for a canal ride around Risca.”
