Volunteers needed for new Macmillan cancer support service

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 14:24, Monday October 10th, 2011.

A new service in Caerphilly County Borough which aims to help people and their families affected by cancer is looking for volunteers to help run the scheme.

Potential recruits will have the chance to find out more at an open day in Caerphilly on Wednesday October 12.

Staff from Macmillan Cancer Support, which is setting up the service in partnership with local charity CancerCareLine, will be on hand to answer questions and give a mini-presentation about the scheme, which is due to start in early 2012.

Volunteers able to spare a few hours a week are needed to help people affected by cancer with practical tasks such as shopping, dog walking, cleaning and laundry. A number of practical support volunteers are needed, as well as Lead Volunteers to co-ordinate the service. The scheme is being launched as part of Macmillan In Every Community.

The information day will be held in Caerphilly Rugby Club, Virginia Park, between 11am and 5.30pm. Potential volunteers are welcome to drop-in throughout the day, have a cup of tea or coffee and chat to staff about volunteer opportunities.

To find out more, or if you would like to get involved but are not able to attend the event, contact Macmillan Cancer Support on 01656 867960 or email walesoffice@macmillan.org.uk.
