Caerphilly County Borough Council has been praised for its commitment to dog welfare by charity the RSPCA.
The charity has given the local authority a ‘Silver Stray Dogs Footprint’ as part of the its Community Animal Welfare Footprints scheme.
The national accolade was presented to the council in recognition for having clear procedures to ensure both the welfare of dogs and a consistency of service.
The award also recognises the importance of information and education and rewards authorities whhich actively promote schemes and services that help to reduce the number stray dogs.
Cllr Rob Gough, cabinet member for public protection said: “I am delighted that we have received this award from the RSPCA. It is a testament to all the hard work that our dog warden team continues to carry out to ensure that standards of dog welfare are maintained to the highest standard.”
I am very pleased that the council have received praise for dog welfare, I like dogs and am glad that we have almost rid the town of strays and loose dogs that once were common place.
I say 'almost' as last Saturday night I saw two mongrels, well fed and obviously cared for in most respects, running around the town. Much has been achieved but there is still a problem caused by ignorant or careless dog owners. Well done to the dog warden team for their efforts but this is still a work in progress.
