The Plaid leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council is calling on the public and politicians of all parties to support calls to name wards at the new £172m Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr after the area’s former collieries.
Councillor Allan Pritchard urged people to email the chief executive and chair of the Aneurin Bevan Health Board to back the naming idea. He has already written himself.
The former Oakdale colliery mine worker said: “I’d love to see the public come behind this idea and I hope that politicians from all parties, whether Assembly Members, MPs or councillors will make their voices known.
“Mining is so embedded in our community and while we can move forward with the great new facility at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr it would be perfectly right to remember our heritage and the sacrifice of miners. I can’t think of a more appropriate choice for our new hospital wards.
“As has been said previously, the mineworkers played such a pivotal role in supporting health care in the county borough.”

Absolutely right, the same ward names as in the Miners Hospital should be used and Nye Bevan Trust should not think twice about it.
I am glad Alan Pritchard correctly calls the Ystrad Mynach building a "facility" as it is certainly not a proper hospital, as the Miners once was.
Why spend so much time and effort on this when no effort has been made on oakdale and surrounding areas.
Sort out your priorities please, oakdale stute was taken down with no thought to the community, the toilets have been removed, the hospital which the miners paid for was sold off instead of being given to the community,endless housing estates have been put up that no one can afford (taking away all our green and pleasant land) and we have no cinema in the area.
Is the name of hospital wards that important in the grand scheme of things, our ancestors would prefer their children to have access to good doctors and facilities first.
Spot on Jan, I agree, plenty of un-needed housing projects to the detriment of families that live here. In our topsy turvy little world Labour and Plaid are more interested is scoring points against each other rather than listening to the people who live in the borough. We are going backwards at a rate of knots.
