Buses have begun running from Caerphilly bus station again after the second phase of controversial roadworks were finished.
Cardiff Road remains closed as work to replace a gas main continues, but buses and traffic will now run through the town with traffic diverted via Clive Street, Ludlow Street and St Fagans Street.
All routes will return to normal except that buses will use Clive Street, Ludlow Street and St Fagans Street to reach Southgate Square opposite Tesco.
The temporary bus stop at White Street will no longer be in use and workers from the council and Stagecoach will be on hand to direct people to the station.
The news comes as some relief to businesses in the town who have said the lack of public transport through Caerphilly town centre has cost them trade.
Alan Prosser, the co-owner of Caerphilly Indoor Market, said: “Hopefully the customers will come back to the top of town. Whether the damage has already been done we’ll have to find out.
“People have started coming to the top of town and those that are have spent money but we ave struggle with this. I’m glad this phase of the works is over.”
St Martin’s ward councillor James Fussell welcomed the news and said workers had completed the phase of work two days ahead of schedule.
He said: “Activity, as far as flow of traffic, will be back to 90%. This will be bringing it back almost to normal.
“I’m more than ecstatic that they’ve got this job done. Pressure is still on but we are slightly relieved.”
A public meeting is to be held on Friday October 28 to discuss the ongoing roadworks.
The meeting has been called by Labour Assembly Member Jeff Cuthbert, MP Wayne David and Eddie Talbot, the chair of the local traders association.
The meeting will be held on Friday October 28 at 6.30pm at Neuadd-y-Parc Hall, Park Lane, Caerphilly.
