Open up Risca’s canals for tourists says Islwyn MP

Islwyn MP Chris Evans recently met with Tom Maloney of the Fourteen Locks Canal Centre to throw his weight behind a campaign to open up Risca’s canals to tourists.

After recently joining canal enthusiasts and local residents for a boat ride around Risca in September, Mr Evans paid a visit to the Fourteen Locks canal centre, in Newport, where he saw for himself one of the canal locks which has been restored as part of the campaign.

The centre has recently seen a huge increase in tourism with some 50,000 visitors expected to visit this year alone.

Mr Evans said: “I am a massive supporter of our canals and opening them up to tourists would have a beneficial effect on tourism in Islwyn.

“The fact that 50,000 people have visited the Fourteen Locks canal centre this year just goes to show the potential that our waterways have.

“We are very lucky to have such fantastic canals and I would encourage all residents of Islwyn to make the most of them.”
