Trading Standards warn of festive loan sharks

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 16:00, Tuesday November 8th, 2011.

Trading Standards officers from Caerphilly County Borough Council are warning of the risks of using illegal and unlicensed loan sharks in the run up to the festive season.

Caerphilly County Borough Council is keen to promote the Wales-wide 24 hour hotline operated by the Wales Illegal Moneylending Unit, where residents can ring to speak to someone in complete confidence. Specialist officers are also on hand to provide support and provide advice on debt and other issues.

Cllr Rob Gough, cabinet member for public protection said: “I would encourage anyone who has borrowed money from an illegal money lender to get in touch with the Wales Illegal Moneylending Unit – support is available – please don’t suffer in silence”.

Residents are encouraged to remember that loan sharks do not have legal agreements – they can be taken to court and loans cannot be enforced.

To contact the Wales Illegal Moneylending Unit, please call 0300 123 3311
