In his regular blog for Caerphilly Observer, Caerphilly Council leader Lindsay Whittle gives his take on recent news.

Mayoral Car

Caerphilly Observer readers may have read widespread media coverage about the cost of ferrying around Welsh councillors in luxury chauffeur-driven cars.

At these times of austerity as far as the public sector is concerned, local authorities should be examining the cost of civic cars to take senior councillors, including mayors, on council duties.

Last year the council decided to replace the Mercedes that was used on civic engagements but instead of leasing another gas guzzler we opted for a very economical Skoda Superb. It not only represented a very much cheaper option in terms of leasing costs but also savings on general running costs. and the Skoda also emits less CO2 emissions than a Mercedes.

That decision sits with the Plaid group’s proposal not to increase allowances for councillors, something which was then adopted by the full council.

In these difficult times with the significant financial pressures, it is right that councillors should be examining all expenditure closely – including money spent on ourselves.

No Cold Calling

We hear many terrible stories about vulnerable people, often the elderly, who are conned by rogue traders or fall victim to doorstep crime.

So I was pleased that the second Cold Calling Control Zone had been set up in the county borough – covering 800 homes on The Bryn Estate in Pontllanfraith. It is the second after an area of Trethomas.

The aim is prevent residents being victims. Many of the residents living within the zone are over 60 and there have been incidents of bogus callers being reported in the past.

Enzo Calzaghe

I’m looking forward to Friday when Enzo Calzaghe will receive his well-deserved OBE from the Lord Lieutenant at the Ty Penallta council offices.

Enzo had huge role in the success of Joe as well as other boxers in the Newbridge stable.

The Freedom of Caerphilly ceremony in honour of Joe was a very special day and I’m sure it will be replicated with the presentation of the OBE to Enzo.
