A schoolgirl has won top prize in a competition to promote world peace.

St Cenydd pupil Ellie Tsipas was named the overall winner in the annual Peace Poster competition run by Caerphilly Lions group.

The 12-year-old said: “I’m ecstatic. I kept on telling myself that it didn’t matter if I didn’t win so I’m overwhelmed.

The annual competition invites pupils to design a poster promoting peace without using language, so that it can be used internationally.

Five schools entered the competition – St Martin’s, St Cenydd, Bedwas High, and Lewis Girls School – and each school’s winner then went forward for the overall prize judged by local Lions President Alan Trevers and Lions District Governor Laurence Pearce, the Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough, MP Wayne David, and councillor James Fussell – representing Caerphilly Town Council.

County Borough Mayor Vera Jenkins said: “The winning poster is brilliantly coloured and brilliantly executed. It’s simplicity is well-thought out and is easily reproducible as a poster.”

The winning poster design

The winning Caerphilly poster will now go forward to be judged regionally and could be in with a chance of the global prize of a trip to Korea.

As the Town Council representative can I thank the Lions for holding the Peace Poster competition and the support from all the schools and young artists that take part every year.
The competition continues to develop our young artists in being creative and innovative to win this world wide competition with the exciting prospect of the overall winner visiting Korea, for some this is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
The Town Council is offering an alternative creative opportunity in asking all the schools to produce a larger than life figure each for the 2012 Fireworks display. Any school that wishes to participate can contact the Town Council on towncouncil@tiscali.co.uk .
Full details will be announced shortly and will revolve around the Cultural Olympiad and the fact that Caerffili will see the torch running through the town on 26th May 2012.
