Pupils and staff at a Rhymney school are celebrating after winning a council award recognising their green efforts.
The red carpet was rolled out on Friday for schools, community groups and businesses from across Caerphilly County Borough for the council’s first Pride in Your Place awards.
The awards, held at the council offices in Ystrad Mynach, recognises those who have gone the extra mile in improving the local environment.
The Mayor, Cllr Vera Jenkins, presented cash prizes to the winners of ten ‘green’ categories and one overall winner – Ysgol Y Lawnt – also scooped the top prize of £1,000 and a unique carved wooden trophy.
Cllr Jenkins said: “The awards evening was a fantastic success and allowed us to recognise the excellent work being undertaken in our communities. We have been delighted with the quality and quantity of the entries received from all parts of the county borough and I’d like to congratulate everyone involved.”
Cllr Allan Pritchard, leader of council, added: “Pride in Your Place provides the opportunity to champion excellence and good news to the wider community. So many positive good news stories will undoubtedly help to stimulate interest in our wildlife, our countryside, our public spaces and our local neighbourhoods.”
