A Caerphilly man has been prosecuted by Trading Standards after he was caught selling fake goods through online auction website eBay.
Leighton Davies of Gwaun Hyfred, Caerphilly, was prosecuted for supplying counterfeit items including luxury branded perfume, jeans and leather wallets.
Davies appeared at Caerphilly Magistrates Court on November 18 2011. He pleaded guilty to the offences, and was fined £200 and ordered to pay £690 local authority costs.
The case came to light after Trading Standards received information that Davies was supplying counterfeit SHURE microphone equipment. This professional grade equipment sells for £780 – the versions Davies was selling were priced at £190, raising the suspicions of the legitimate manufacturer.
When Davies’ home was searched, it was found that he was also in possession of the other counterfeit goods.
Cllr Rob Gough, cabinet member for public protection said: “Our Trading Standards officers regularly carry out sweeps of websites such as eBay, looking for sellers of counterfeit items in the locality.
“Legitimate manufacturers, local shops selling genuine items and consumers themselves are all affected by the trade in fake goods. If residents are aware of similar goings on, I would encourage them to report the matter to our Trading Standards team.”
