Pupils from across Caerphilly County Borough have been busy preparing special banners for display during Caerphilly town’s Medieval Christmas Fayre this weekend.
Over 50 colourful medieval banners have been produced to line the walkway to Caerphilly Castle on December 10 and 11. The banners have been created by schools from all over the county borough and will bring added colour to the festive fayre.
One lucky school will be selected as the overall winner receiving vouchers for the school and the banner artwork will be featured in promotional material for next year’s event.
A council spokesman said: “The schools have really worked hard with the children and the effort and quantity of banners made has been overwhelming.”
Full to almost bursting as banquet tickets sell like hot cakes
Caerphilly Castle will also be a hive of activity this weekend as it welcomes the Illuminata digital light and sound show and a series of authentic medieval banquets from this Friday, December 9.
Due to strong demand, tickets for the Saturday night banquets have already sold out, but a limited number of tickets remain available for the five-course themed extravaganza in Caerphilly Castle’s Great Hall on the Friday and Sunday nights. Priced at £30 per head, tickets can be booked directly at the Castle or by telephoning 029 2088 3143.
The banquets take place following the last Illuminata screening each evening. As darkness falls, the castle’s walls of the inner ward will be bathed in light, creating an amazing feast for the senses. Images and sounds depicting centuries of this iconic stronghold’s history will be projected digitally in glorious technicolour. There will be two free screenings each night at 5.30pm and 6.30pm.
Illuminata 2011 is supported under the Welsh Government’s Heritage Tourism Project, which is backed with £8.5m from the European Regional Development Fund. The project aims to maximise the economic value of heritage through increasing the volume, length and value of visits to Wales, linking themes of Welsh heritage at national, regional and local levels.
