A Crosskeys man has been jailed for four years and eight months for causing death by dangerous driving.

Cardiff Crown Court was told on Friday how Jamie Gray, 23, of Garden Suburbs, Pontywaun, was driving at almost 70mph in a 30mph zone when he struck and killed 27-year-old Ian Hamilton.

The body of Mr Hamilton, who was from Bristol, was found dead at the side of Penmaen Road, between Oakdale and Pontllanfraith in the early hours of Sunday July 17 this year.

He had been visiting family in the area and was last seen alive walking from the bus station area in Blackwood.

The court was told that Gray was caught after police traced the borrowed BMW he was driving by examining tiny pieces of plastic at the scene.

Gray admitted causing death by dangerous driving, driving without insurance, driving without a licence, failing to stop after an accident and failing to report an accident. He was on bail for alleged drink-driving at the time of the collision.

He will also face a four year driving ban when he is released from prison.
