British Transport Police are advising Christmas revellers to “stay awake” while travelling home on the train.
The advice comes as the force is preparing to increase patrols on trains across the Valleys and South Wales in general as part of Operation Genesis.
BTP has said a number of special operations will be running at stations throughout Wales, while officers will also be patrolling trains alongside Arriva Trains Wales security staff.
Chief Inspector Sandra England, BTP’s Sector Commander for Wales, said: “We understand that at this time of year, with Christmas fast approaching, people will be out at parties and will be consuming alcohol.
“We certainly do not want to spoil this and would simply ask that anyone drinking alcohol does so responsibly.”
CI England warned that officers would not hesitate to take action against anyone acting in a criminal or antisocial manner.
She added: “Operation Genesis is about highlighting personal safety messages to help people stay safe when they are out and about over Christmas.
“Neighbourhood Policing Teams will be conducting high-visibility patrols and there will be additional police presence at mainline stations.
“The extensive use of CCTV across the rail network will once again be utilised to help police manage incidents.
“More people are using train services into Welsh cities and towns than ever before, and this is expected to increase as the festivities and office parties get into full swing.
“While we want everyone to enjoy themselves, we will not tolerate anti-social behaviour or any form of aggression towards the rail staff who work hard to keep the services running.
Anyone who witnesses or is subjected to anti-social behaviour can call British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
