Almost £1million worth of road and pavement repairs across Caerphilly County Borough are well underway, according to the council.

Earlier this year, following one of the coldest winters in a generation, the cabinet of Caerphilly County Borough Council decided to spend £900,000 improving the roads savaged by the harsh weather.

Leader of the council Lindsay Whittle, and Cllr Rob Gough, cabinet member for transportation and planning went out with a crew this week to see the highway improvement work in action.

They visited Penallta Road in Ystrad Mynach where they got the chance to see new hi-tech ‘jet patching’ equipment being used. The new machine helps save time allowing repair teams to fill in more potholes.

Cllr Whittle said, “Last year’s harsh winter played havoc with our road surfaces so we decided that major investment was needed to tackle the problem. It’s great to see clear evidence of this improvement work when driving around the county borough and I’m sure residents are already enjoying the benefits of our actions.”

Cllr Gough said: “I was delighted to be invited along to see the excellent work that is being done to improve local roads. The council’s highways network is our biggest asset, estimated to be valued at approximately £1 billion, and we are committed to ensuring that it is maintained to a high standard for our residents.”

Major resurfacing works have recently been undertaken on a number of key rotes including the A469 Llanbradach bypass and Blackwood Road in Pontllanfraith. Minor resurfacing works are also taking place in many residential areas including Crumlin, Oakdale, Newbridge, Llanbradach, Caerphilly, Cefn Hengoed, Machen and Pontllanfraith.

Footways in more than 20 areas across the Caerphilly county borough are also being repaired.

The council has also boosted its salt supplies in preparation for the winter’s cold weather after stocks ran low earlier this year and it was forced to limit gritting to key routes.
