Lord Don Touhig has been honoured by the Islwyn Labour Party for his 15 years of work as the area’s MP.

Current Islwyn MP Chris Evans joined members of the Islwyn Labour Party recently at Newbridge Memo to thank Lord Touhig for his service.

Mr Evans described Lord Touhig, who was the MP for Islwyn from February 1995 until he stepped down at the General Election in May this year, as a real champion for people all over the constituency.

Lord Touhig was made a Peer in the dissolution honours.

Paying tribute to his work for older people, veterans and former miners, Mr Evans said his years working as the researcher to Lord Touhig had been a real “master class” in how to be an MP.

After speeches by Mr Evans, Irene James AM and Councillor Tom Williams, the Islwyn Labour Party chair, a presentation of a statute of a miner was made to Lord and Lady Touhig as a thank you for their service to the people of Islwyn.

Ted Beacham of Newbridge made a further presentation of two photographs of the Miners memorial at Six Bells.

Lord Touhig said: ‘” owe everything to the Islwyn Labour Party and the people of the constituency who put their trust in me to represent them in the House of Commons for the past 15 years.

“My wife Jennifer and our family have been hugely supportive and I owe my family, the Labour Party and the people of Islwyn a debt that I can never repay.”
