More than half of schools in Caerphilly County Borough have now been awarded the Eco School Green Flag.

Cllr Phil Bevan, cabinet member for education, leisure and lifelong learning said: “This is a very impressive achievement, and highlights the dedication and commitment to sustainable development and global citizenship by schools in the Caerphilly County Borough – well done everyone.”

Of the 46 schools to achieve the Green Flag Award, 21 schools have achieved their second Eco School Green Flag. Five schools have achieved their third and are now working towards the Eco School Platinum Award.

Some of the Eco School Green Flag projects achieved to date include:

  • Pentwynmawr Primary – Fairtrade project
  • Markham Primary – Walking bus project – aimed at reducing traffic congestion
  • Ynysddu Primary – Allotment project/community links
  • Penllwyn Primary – Habitat development project
  • Bedwas High School – Outdoor classroom project
  • Bedwas Junior School – Local to Global (From Wales to South Africa) project
  • Ysgol Y Lawnt – Climate Change Garden project
  • Twyn Primary – Energy Efficiency project
  • Heolddu Comprehensive – Network of Environmental Clubs project
  • Cwmaber Infants – Outdoor Classroom project

Caerphilly County Borough Council has said the challenge now is to encourage every school in the county borough to achieve the prestigious Green Flag Award.

Cllr Bevan added: “The Eco Schools programme helps make environmental awareness and action a central part of school life for the whole school community.”
