Photo exhibition about St Athan Boys’ Village

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 13:23, Sunday October 17th, 2010.

A photography project showcasing the abandoned 1930s holiday camp, St Athan Boys’ Village, is taking place at Rhymney Library until October 29.

The project, created by Polish-born photographer Magdalena Garczynska with co-operation from Clubs for Young People Wales, includes a photography and DVD exhibition depicting the Boys’ Village from the early days until recently when the now derelict site was put up for sale.

Magdalena said: “I completed this project as part of my Photography Degree. I was fascinated about the colourful history of Boys’ Village and the Boys’ Clubs and wanted to produce this piece of work.

“I am very glad to take this out to the communities where many people live who would have attended the Boys’ Village residential centre.”

Joff Carroll, Chief Executive of Clubs for Young People Wales, said: “Many people from the Rhymney Valley have very fond memories of Boys’ Village and, hopefully, they will enjoy remembering the good times they had at the centre.”
