More than 100 apprentice and trainee jobs created by Caerphilly Council

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 10:38, Wednesday February 8th, 2012.

Two-thirds of the apprentice and trainee jobs promised over a three year period by Plaid-led Caerphilly County Borough Council have already been created.

The training and apprenticeship scheme, costing £500,000, has seen 107 young people start work through this programme in the last six months . At least another 43 posts are planned.

Councillor James Fussell, cabinet member for human resources, said: “We are committed to this programme for the next year as well.”

The apprenticeship scheme has been introduced as the council has made savings of £17m in its budget over three years with senior management roles among the areas targeted. Frontline services have been maintained.

Colin Mann, deputy leader and cabinet member for financial resources, said: “The cabinet has worked hard to make the savings in their own service areas and divert money to where it is most needed and effective.

“The apprentice scheme has been a particular priority for this authority because we have been determined to give young people a good start in their working life. Young people must not pay the penalty for Coalition Government policies as happened in the 1980s under Margaret Thatcher.”
