Memorial garden opened to honour WWII hero Edward Chapman

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 11:00, Friday November 26th, 2010.

Pontlottyn World War II hero Corporal Edward Chapman has been honoured with memorial garden n the town.

Mr Chapman was one of only two Welsh infantry soldiers to be awarded the prestigious Victoria Cross for bravery during the war.

The garden, in Pontlottyn, has been planted with flowers by local school children. In the spring, these will flower in the shape of a VC medal.

Mr Chapman was awarded the VC for his actions near the Dortmund-Ems Canal, in Germany, with the 3rd Batallion, Monmouthshire Regiment in 1945. He single-handedly fought off advancing Nazis under heavy fire, protecting his isolated unit.

He even carried his wounded commander to safety and took a sniper’s bullet. You can read his full story in an extract from the London Gazette printed on Juky 13, 1945.

Mr Chapman sadly passed away in 2002.
