Pupils from Pentwynmawr Primary School recently held a fashion show with a difference.

Modelling clothes made from recycled materials and Fairtrade products, the pupils of the Newbridge school showed off the culmination of months of hardwork learning about recycling and the importance of Fairtrade products.

Pupils in Years 5 and 6 have been taking part in workshops over recent months about Fairtrade and the impact they can have during their day-to-day lives.

The pupils have been helped by Fairtrade volunteer Jess Amos and Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Sustainable Development team.

The children have learned about cutting the amount of waste sent to landfill by re-using materials and also designed Fairtrade cotton t-shirts.

This hard work culminated in a Fairtrade/Re-use fashion show where the pupils showcased their Fairtrade outfits made from recycled materials.

Cllr Colin Mann, deputy leader of council and cabinet member responsible for sustainability said: “This excellent school project helped the youngsters to learn some important sustainability messages, which I am confident they will continue to develop as they progress throughout their school career.”
