More than 700 affordable homes for Caerphilly County Borough

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 11:00, Thursday December 2nd, 2010.

More than 700 affordable homes will have been built in Caerphilly by March 31, 2012 – new Welsh Assembly figures reveal.

Under the One Wales Agreement, between Labour and Plaid Cymru for control of the Welsh Assembly, a total of 6,500 affordable homes were to be provided over four years from 2007.

That target has been exceeded and 6,707 were built in the first three years. In Caerphilly 95 were delivered in 2007-08.This rose to 203 in 2008-09 and 170 in 2009-10. It is planned to provide another 193 in the current financial year with a further 77 in 2011-12.

Plaid Cymru’s Caerphilly Assembly Candidate Ron Davies has welcomed the news.

He said: “I’m proud that Plaid Minister Jocelyn Davies has exceeded the target set in 2007. It means that people are able to stay in their communities and live in reasonably priced homes. This is the result of Plaid ideas, which became part of the One Wales Agreement when the party went into Government, and Plaid has delivered for the people.

“It is important to continue the momentum despite tightening budgets providing a huge challenge. Organisations in the housing sector, along with Plaid-led Caerphilly council, have played a key part in ensuring hundreds more affordable housing for our area.

“On affordable housing the Plaid-led administration has certainly stepped up to the mark unlike the dismal performance of the former Labour-run council in Caerphilly.”
