Free intercoms for vulnerable residents in Gelligaer and New Tredegar

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 13:00, Monday January 10th, 2011.

Hundreds of vulnerable residents in the Gelligaer and New Tredegar areas are to have intercom systems installed in their homes for free.

Bargoed and Rhymney Neighbourhood Policing Team has worked with Safer Merthyr Tydfil to help elderly people, victims of crime, housebound and vulnerable members of the community.

In total, £10,000 has been awarded to each Neighbourhood Policing Team through the efforts of Inspector Fran Richley.

The funding will provide 200 intercom systems in residents’ homes to prevent bogus and cold callers.

PCSO Neville Davies said: “After speaking to residents that have already received a free intercom you can immediately see the how the additional security benefits their lives.

“It’s a great scheme for older members of the community, giving them more confidence in saying no to strangers at the door. We always advise people not to open the door to strangers, and certainly not let them into your home, but we have found that the addition of these intercom systems can help to just provide that extra peace of mind for vulnerable residents.”

If you are interested or know of someone that may be interested in receiving a free intercom then please call Bargoed Police Station on 02920 857 455 or Rhymney Police Station on 01495 233 961.
