BBC One Show presenter Alex Jones and Only Men Aloud Musical Director Tim Rhys-Evans will co-present this year’s BBC Proms in the Park, in Caerphilly.
The show, which was rained off last year, will be held at the Owain Glyndwr Playing Fields, on Saturday September 8 at 7.45pm.
Performing a selection of operatic favourites at the Proms in the Park and popular classics will be two of Wales’ most popular singing sensations – soprano and Radio 3 presenter Elin Manahan Thomas from Swansea and tenor Wynne Evans from Carmarthen.
They will also lead the audience in sing-along performances of songs including Sosban Fach, We’ll Keep a Welcome and Cwm Rhondda, accompanied by the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales. The Orchestra, under the wand of Tecwyn Evans, will be performing a variety of magical music throughout the evening – including music from Harry Potter, and the BBC One drama Merlin, made by Shine West for BBC Cymru Wales.
Fifteen-year-old cellist Laura van der Heijden, winner of BBC Young Musician 2012, will be joining the Orchestra on stage following her recent victory, and will perform the second movement from Elgar’s Cello Concerto.
Bringing the summer festivities to a close, with classical music and fireworks, families and music-lovers are invited to bring picnics and flags and to join in with this magical Prom presented by BBC Cymru Wales, supported by Caerphilly County Borough Council.
Tickets can be bought in advance for £10 (with children 12 and under free), and can be booked through the Blackwood Miners Institute (01495 227206 / www.blackwoodminersinstitute.com); the BBC National Orchestra of Wales Audience Line (03700 10 10 51); or in person through the ‘Visit Caerphilly’ centre.
