Residents have joined forces over the past week to help clean-up an area of green space in Penllwyn, Pontllanfraith.
The clean-up of Highmead greenspace was carried out by Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Countryside Service and the Penllwyn Community Partnership. It initially involved a group of several local residents cleaning up litter and debris, successfully collecting four tonnes of rubble and rubbish from the site
A local contractor was then commissioned to improve the flora at the site by cutting back the existing shrubs and grass. After cutting the grass more waste was revealed which was collected by a group of volunteers including Community Payback and the Tidy Towns Team.
To complete the improvements, school children from Pontllanfraith Comprehensive School will eventually plant trees to encourage the growth of woodland.
Cllr Dave Poole, cabinet member for community and leisure services, said: “An amazing effort from all involved. The volunteers and the Tidy Towns Team have done an incredible job of clearing up this area of green space. When the trees are planted with the help of the school children this area will truly be transformed into a scenic spot that can be admired and enjoyed by the whole community.”
The scheme was funded by the Welsh Government through the Tidy Towns initiative which supports a range of environmental projects across the country.
The clean-up was part of the wider Big Spring Clean campaign run by Caerphilly County Borough Council.
