Pupils and staff at Ty’n-Y-Wern Primary School in Trethomas have marked the school’s centenary with a day of fancy dress and dancing.

The school celebrated 100 years on July 16 with a special concert.

Teacher Caroline ap Hywel explained: “In order to commemorate the school’s centenary, we decided to undertake a number of whole school projects.

“Each class from Nursery to Year 6 chose a decade from the last 100 years and researched national, local and school events of that period.

“The children interviewed ex-teachers and pupils, visited the site of the old Navigation Colliery and looked at primary resources such as the original school log books.

“They also learned and performed dances of the era, put on a 1970s fashion show and much more.

“All of this work culminated in the production of a Centenary Book.

“In addition to this, pupils have been involved in planning, designed and painting an outdoor mural, charting the history of the past 100 years.”

The school entered the children’s centenary work into the Welsh Heritage Schools Initiative and was successful in gaining an award for the fourth consecutive year.

A cine film night was also held in May with 70 guests attending.
