Caerphilly-based family dairy takes top prize for butter at Royal Welsh Show

Business, News | Richard Gurner | Published: 15:00, Wednesday July 31st, 2013.

A family-run dairy scooped first prize for its creamery butter at last week’s Royal Welsh Show.

Castle Dairies won the accolade Supreme Champion for their Welsh Salted Creamery Butter – produced with 100% Welsh cream from their site in Caerphilly.

The business, established in 1966, took four awards altogether on the opening day of the 50th Royal Welsh Agricultural Society show – the biggest event in the Welsh agriculture calendar.

Castle Dairies also won first prize for their Unsalted Creamery Butter, and the RWAS commemorative shield for specialist butter class for both their unsalted and salted products.

Based at Pontygwindy Industrial Estate, Castle Dairies produce award-winning organic and conventional butters for the UK wholesale and retail markets.

The Royal Welsh Show, at Llanelwedd, Builth Wells attracted more than 100,000 visitors this Monday and Tuesday alone, including the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.

Castle Dairies’ managing director Nigel Lloyd said: “We were thrilled with the comments – the judges said our butter had a lovely balanced flavour, was rich and creamy with a slightly salty finish. This is a huge honour for us, further recognising Castle Dairies as the home of Welsh butter, keeping the tradition of high quality butter-making alive in Wales.”

Castle Dairies Welsh butter is available at leading supermarkets including Morrisons, Asda, Lidl, Sainsbury’s and The Co-operative, as well as leading independent retailers.
