Welsh Water begins mains maintenance work in Caerphilly town

Work to upgrade a water main along Cardiff Road in Caerphilly town centre is due to begin today (Monday August 5).

The first phase of the work by Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water involves digging trenches along Cardiff Road. Traffic will be disrupted with a “give and take” traffic management system in place with drivers having to negotiate the work without traffic lights.

Caerphilly County Borough Council has said that such an approach will be monitored and adapted if necessary.

Give and take should be approached like any other obstruction on the highway such as a parked car – the vehicle whose route is not obstructed has priority.

The second stage of the works to replace the mains system between number 2 and 36 Cardiff Road will begin in September and Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Highways division will continue to work closely with D?r Cymru, businesses and residents to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum during this essential work.

Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water’s distribution manager for the area Gavin Williams said: “This is part of our ongoing programme of work to replace and refurbish old water mains with new plastic pipes to ensure top quality drinking water for our customers for many, many years to come.

“We have been liaising closely with Caerphilly County Borough Council Highways department to agree traffic measure that will enable us to get the job done safely and quickly, whilst also keeping traffic moving and avoiding excessive delays.

“We’ve written to people who will be directly impacted by the work and we’d also like to thank everyone else affected for bearing with us while we work in their community.”

Queries and concerns arising from these works should be directed to D?r Cymru Welsh Water’s call centre on 0800 052 0130.
