Last year’s Tour de France winner and Olympic gold medallist Sir Bradley Wiggins will be competing in the 2013 Tour of Britain with former Sky team mate Mark Cavendish.
The two cyclists are set to race to Caerphilly for the tour’s stage five finish on Thursday September 19.
The stage will see 114 cyclists from 19 teams race 177 kilometres from Machynlleth to Caerphilly with two ascents of Caerphilly Mountain before the final finish line.
Speaking at an official launch event held in Caerphilly town, Cllr Harry Andrews, Leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council, said: “I am delighted that once again we are playing host to such a prestigious sporting event.
“This year the route will give us even more opportunity to showcase our beautiful borough and I hope to see the residents lining the route as splendidly as they did last year.”
Among the riders in this year’s tour will be Newport’s Jon Mould.
Jon said: “Being local, I have had chance to ride Caerphilly Mountain several times.
“Whether that will be an advantage is yet to be seen, but I am really looking forward to putting in the work to secure a great finish for myself and my team.”
It will be the third time the race has had a stage finish in Caerphilly.
