Newbridge woman celebrates 100th birthday

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 15:00, Tuesday August 27th, 2013.

A resident of Ty Iscoed Residential Home in Newbridge has reached the grand age of 100, and celebrated the occasion with her family and friends including great-great grandchild, baby Harriett.

Mrs Bessie Williams turned 100 on August 13.

Born in Bristol as one of eight children, her family moved to Aberbargoed when she was eight.

In 1933 she married Victor Williams and had four children Maldwyn, Olwyn, John and Keith and lived in Ystrad Mynach.
Despite moving to Chester in 1959, Bessie returned to South Wales in 1978 when she and her second husband Jack retired to Llanbradach to be close to her family.

Bessie was an active member of the community and was fully involved in the social activities of the local Pensioners’ Club, with coffee mornings and spending holidays in Britain and Spain.

At the age of 93 she requested to live at Ty Iscoed and has been happily living there for the past seven years.
Cllr Robin Woodyatt, Cabinet Member for Social Services, presented Bessie with flowers and a card on behalf of Caerphilly County Borough Council. She also received a message from the Queen.

Bessie has four children, eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and ten great-great grandchildren.
