Man jailed for Markham cyclist’s death

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 13:00, Friday February 7th, 2014.

A motorist has been jailed for a year after he admitted causing the death of a Markham man by careless driving.

Michael Bisi, 60, of Western Terrace, Ebbw Vale, was driving his Mercedes 240 when he collided with cyclist Paul Jones.

The incident happened on the A472 Hafodyrynys Road in Crumlin on August 12 last year.

On January 13 at Cardiff Crown Court, Bisi admitted a charge of causing Mr Jones’ death by driving without due care and attention.

Sixty-year-old grandfather Mr Jones died at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport on the same day as the collision.
A keen cyclist, Mr Jones was originally from Cwmbran and had moved to Markham 17 years ago.

Bisi was given a 12-month custodial sentence and a two-year driving ban at Cardiff Crown Court on February 5. He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £120.
