Two Caerphilly Council bosses charged with misconduct in a public office

The chief executive and deputy chief executive of Caerphilly Council are to face charges of misconduct in public office, Avon and Somerset Police have confirmed.

Having reviewed the police file, Nicola Haywood, head of the Crown Prosecution Service’s South West Complex Casework Unit, felt there was sufficient evidence and it was in the public interest to charge council boss Anthony O’Sullivan, aged 54 of Merthyr Tydfil and his deputy Nigel Barnett, aged 51, of Bargoed.

The council’s head of legal Daniel Perkins, aged 48, of Brynmawr, Gwent, has also been summonsed.

All three are due to appear at Bristol Magistrates court on April 22 2014.

The charges follow a police investigation into huge pay rises awarded to senior council bosses.

A spokeswoman for Caerphilly council said: “We can confirm that two senior officers have been formally charged by Avon and Somerset Police and a third officer has been reported for summons in connection with the offence of misconduct in a public office.

“We are unable to offer any further comment other than to say we continue to fully co-operate with the police with their enquiries.”
